Sable
Champagne on Brown

With the ability to test for the agouti (bay) gene came the
revelation that seal brown horses were not solid black horses with another gene added
to cause the lighter shading. They tested "non-a" at at least one locus,
making their genotype look like bay!
Later, a test was developed to discern the difference between bay and brown.
Thus, we were forced to deal with the fact that there are champagne horses whose
color is the result of champagne on this newly isolated color. That color
was dubbed Sable, and has taken its rightful place alongside Amber, Gold, and
Classic. Here are some examples of horses now classified as Sable.
They look much like Classic, but test positive for agouti, and further testing
reveals their base color to be brown (At). Visually, they are almost impossible
to distinguish from Classic. This makes sense, as Classic is Champagne on
black, and Sable is Champagne on the mostly-black color, brown. Click to
